Smith College is a private, independent women's liberal arts college located in Northampton, which is a city located in Hampshire County, in the US state of Massachusetts, with a population of nearly 29 000 inhabitants, as estimated during the 2000 census. Northampton is part of the Springfield, Massachusetts Metropolitan Statistical Area and serves as the county seat of Hampshire County.
Smith was chartered in 1871 and opened its doors, for the first time, to students, in 1875. The college consists of 41 academic departments and programs and it is the first and only women's college in the United States to grant its own undergraduate degrees in engineering. It currently offers men and women graduate work, leading to the degrees of master of arts in teaching, fine arts, education of the deaf, biological sciences, exercise and sport studies, and master and Ph.D. in social work, among other educational opportunities.
Smith's athletic teams are known as the Pioneers, since 1986, name which expresses the spirit of Smith's students and the college's leadership role in women's athletics. They compete in NCAA Division III, in 14 sports, which include alpine skiing, crew, cross country, swimming and diving, and track & field. Their distinctive colors are blue and gold.
