Smith was chartered in 1871 and opened its doors, for the first time, to students, in 1875. It currently offers men and women graduate work, leading to the degrees of master of arts in teaching, fine arts, education of the deaf, biological sciences, exercise and sport studies, and master and Ph.D. in social work, among other educational opportunities.

Athletics

Smith's athletic teams are known as the Pioneers, since 1986, name which expresses the spirit of Smith's students and the college's leadership role in women's athletics. They compete in NCAA Division III, in 14 sports, which include alpine skiing, crew, cross country, swimming and diving, and track & field. Their distinctive colors are blue and gold.
